Zeb-Schooner Life, a film documentary about legendary schooner Captain Zeb Tilton, premiered in 2008 to sellout crowds and a standing ovation. The film provides a glimpse into a whole era of maritime history, with tales of shipbuilding, arctic whaling, famous sea captains in the age of sail, and most importantly, our enduring romance with the sea. What may be most remarkable about Zeb Tilton is that he kept alive a way of life, that even as he practiced it, was a thing of the past. As he worked the schooner trade in the age of oil and gas, he became a national figure as he reminded so many of our maritime heritage.
Based on Polly Burroughs' book, "Zeb, A Celebrated Schooner Life, "the documentary tells Zeb's story through more than thirty interviews with Zeb's family, those who worked with him, and maritime and schooner experts from around New England. It has been reviewed by the Maritime Schooner Association, Sail Magazine, Sailing, and Sea History, among other publications.
Detrick Lawrence in its thirty year history has produced more than 150 films. Among them are "Gloucester's Adventure" which chronicles the rise and fall of the fishing industry as told through the story of the historic fishing schooner Adventure, broadcast on WGBH, and "Massachusetts Story," the company's first production which examined the search for oil on Georges Bank and its potential impact on the Cape and Islands, featuring interviews with a number of Vineyard icons.
